Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov confirmed discussions on peace but declined to elaborate on specifics. Russia currently controls approximately 90% of Donbas, which includes Donetsk and Luhansk provinces, along with Crimea annexed in 2014 and significant portions of Zaporizhzhia and Kherson regions. Putin has repeatedly stated that any peace deal must recognize Russian claims over these areas, including full withdrawal of Ukrainian forces from remaining Donbas territories.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced plans for direct talks with U.S. President Donald Trump on December 28 to address territorial disputes and security guarantees.
