A majority of New York City residents believe Mayor Eric Adams broke the law and should resign following his recent indictment on bribery and corruption charges, according to a poll by The New York Times and Siena College. The survey revealed that 53 percent of registered voters think Adams should step down, while only 40 percent want him to serve out his remaining 14 months in office.
Adams, who is facing allegations of accepting illegal campaign donations from Turkey in exchange for political favors, currently has a low 26 percent approval rating. In a hypothetical Democratic primary, he ranked third, trailing behind former Governor Andrew Cuomo and State Attorney General Letitia James.
This poll is one of several showing growing calls by New York City residents for Adams to resign, yet he has largely dismissed the criticism and remains in office as he prepares for a potential trial next year. Last month, Adams pleaded not guilty to the charges.
“He should step aside,” said 67-year-old Manhattan Democrat Maria Fuentes, 67, per the New York Times. “You can’t trust him. Who else is he taking bribes from that we don’t know about?”
