A missile struck the United States Embassy compound in Baghdad early Saturday morning, destroying part of its air defense system and sending plumes of smoke over one of the most heavily fortified areas in the Iraqi capital.

Thick smoke was seen rising over the embassy compound in central Baghdad, with footage circulating widely online. A missile struck a helipad inside the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad, two security officials told the Associated Press. The projectile landed within the embassy’s boundaries in the Green Zone, the heavily fortified district in central Baghdad that houses Iraqi government institutions and foreign embassies.

Images from verified accounts on social media showed damage to the embassy’s Counter-Rocket, Artillery, and Mortar (C-RAM) air defense system and its associated radar, with signs of fire observed at the site.

No U.S. casualties have been reported so far, and the U.S. Embassy had not yet issued an official statement as of early Saturday.

The attack marks a significant escalation in the targeting of American diplomatic facilities in Iraq. It is the second time the U.S. Embassy has come under attack in Baghdad since the start of the war. The sprawling embassy complex, one of the largest U.S. diplomatic facilities in the world, has been repeatedly targeted by rockets and drones fired by Iran-aligned militias.

Al Jazeera’s correspondent in Baghdad, Mahmoud Abdelwahed, noted that Iran-aligned armed groups in Iraq have repeatedly pledged to attack U.S. facilities, particularly the embassy, in order to avenge the death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the former supreme leader, who was assassinated along with family members by a U.S.-Israeli air strike at the beginning of the war.

The day before the attack, Iran-aligned groups issued a statement offering $100,000 as a reward to anyone who provided information leading to U.S. diplomatic personnel inside the country, with some personnel reportedly taking shelter in civilian homes.

The embassy strike came just hours after President Trump announced a major offensive against Iranian energy infrastructure. Trump said U.S. forces “obliterated” targets on Iran’s Kharg Island, which is home to the primary terminal that handles the country’s oil exports, warning that its broader oil infrastructure could be next if Iran continues to interfere with shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.

On Friday, the embassy had renewed its Level 4 security alert for Iraq, warning that Iran and Iran-aligned militia groups “may continue to target” U.S. citizens, interests, and infrastructure.

The Baghdad attack also coincided with broader regional turmoil. A missile was intercepted on its way to Doha, Qatar, on Friday night, with the country evacuating certain areas as a precautionary measure. The U.S. also ordered all non-essential staff at its embassy in Oman, as well as their family members, to leave the sultanate due to risks linked to the war against Iran, following the deaths of two people in a drone strike in northern Oman.

An American official said 2,500 more Marines and an amphibious assault ship are being sent to the Middle East nearly two weeks into the war with Iran, which has continued to launch widespread missile and drone attacks on Israel and neighboring Gulf states and has effectively closed the Strait of Hormuz, through which a fifth of the world’s traded oil passes.

The full extent of the damage to the embassy compound and any potential casualties remained unclear as of the time of publication, with investigations ongoing.
