Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro has a memoir coming out next month titled *Where We Keep the Light: Stories from a Life of Service*. The book hits shelves on January 27, 2026, published by Harper, an imprint of HarperCollins. It covers his family life, his Jewish faith, his rise in Pennsylvania politics, and personal trials like the arson attack on the governor’s mansion earlier this year while his family slept inside after a Passover gathering.

Politicians often release books like this to share their stories on their own terms. Shapiro details lessons from knocking on doors and working to solve problems in communities. He also opens up about tough moments, including the time he was vetted as a potential running mate for Kamala Harris in 2024. That process ended with Harris picking Tim Walz instead, and she later wrote about tensions in her own book, prompting Shapiro to call some of her claims inaccurate.

Shapiro plans a book tour starting in Philadelphia, then heading to New York and Washington, D.C. These stops will give him chances to speak directly to audiences in key spots. Meanwhile, he faces reelection in 2026 back home in Pennsylvania, a state that decides close national races. Republicans already point to his national profile as a sign he’s more focused on bigger offices than day-to-day governing.

Questions linger from his time as attorney general and now as governor. One involves a $295,000 settlement paid out over sexual harassment claims against a top aide who resigned. Critics asked what Shapiro knew and when, though no direct wrongdoing stuck to him. Another case revolves around the death of Ellen Greenberg, ruled a suicide despite 20 stab wounds; his office upheld that finding multiple times, drawing anger from the family who wanted it changed to homicide or undetermined.

Election efforts under his watch drew scrutiny too. Alex Soros once publicly thanked Shapiro for work to “enhance access to the ballot,” a phrase that raises eyebrows among those wary of outside money influencing voting rules.

The Democrat Party base has shifted in ways that could complicate any higher ambitions for Shapiro. Parts of it now include vocal critics of Israel, with growing influence from groups sympathetic to Hamas causes. As a Jewish governor who speaks plainly about his faith and support for Israel’s right to defend itself, he might face real hurdles in primaries dominated by activists on the far left.

Still, party power brokers often prioritize winners over ideology. Pennsylvania remains a must-win swing state, and Shapiro proved he can appeal across lines there. Donors and insiders might back someone who keeps the map in play, even if it means overlooking demographic preferences.

Faith plays a role in Shapiro’s story—he talks about it guiding his public service. The book’s title evokes light in dark times, perhaps nodding to biblical ideas of perseverance and truth amid trials. Proverbs speaks of the path of the righteous shining brighter, a fitting image for a leader navigating arson attempts, political attacks, and a fractured party.

All this positions Shapiro as a figure to watch. The memoir and tour amount to laying groundwork, whether for reelection or something farther down the road. In politics, books like this rarely appear without reason. Voters will judge if the light he keeps is one that serves Pennsylvania families first, or mainly illuminates his own path forward.
