The Pentagon on Thursday revealed that Russia has experienced more casualties in its two-year war with Ukraine than it has in all other conflicts since World War II combined.
United States defense officials claimed September was the deadliest month in the war, and Russia has now suffered approximately 600,000 casualties during the two-year span. It has also lost two-thirds of its pre-war tank inventory so far, and 32 naval vessels, according to Fox News.
“Russian losses, both killed and wounded in action, in just the first year of the war exceeded the total of all Soviet losses in any conflict since World War II combined,” a U.S. official told reporters in a phone call. “It’s kind of the Russian way of war where they continue to throw mass into the problem, and I think we’ll continue to see high losses.”
The unnamed official said Russian President Vladimir Putin has resisted the urge to draft more soldiers into the conflict, because of the consequences it could have on the Russian population.
