The fate of the Hyde Amendment, which protects taxpayers from having to fund elective abortions, still hangs in the balance, as Democrats in the House and the Senate are fiercely determined to repeal it. Likewise, Democrats also oppose the Weldon Amendment, which protects conscience protections of hospitals and providers that don’t perform abortions. They’re opposed to the Helms Amendment, too, which protects foreign aid from funding elective abortions overseas.
